day 7

We starting painting the mural today, I was really happy to see how involved the people of La Romana are with each other. The street that we are painting on quickly became the main hang out spot for everyone in the community. There were so many different sounds around us. I could hear everything from kids playing and radios blasting to rooster calls.

Day 6

Sunday we woke up early to go to the beach. I'm used to Coney Island filth so when we walked up to crystal clear water and palm trees it was like we've finally arrived to the Dominican Republic. We saw some beautiful color combinations and met some interesting people.

day 5

Today we drove into La Romana to visit the wall that we were given to paint. It is 163 feet long and almost 8 feet tall. There are houses across the street where families with children live. It's really important to my class and I that we create something that interesting for these people to look at everyday.

day 3

After lunch our class worked until 9 o'clock making patterns and brainstorming ideas for the mural. The patterns were made from cardboard stencils and spray paint. Everyone came up with characters in their sketchbooks which were then combined to create a composition. Molly the moth was the special guest of yesterday, I was given the personal responsibilty to make sure that molly (RIP) made it into our mural.

day 2

The first half of the day was spent painting on discarded pieces of wood and cardboard. Alejandro and I painted a neon green door that was taken off of it´s hinges. The assignment for tonight is to take those pieces and place them in unexpected spots on the Chavon property.

After lunch we drove into the nearest town La Romana. We met three professional street artists and were given a tour of all the public art (legal and illegal) in the town. We visited the local gallery that housed all of the most famous artists in La Romana.

This is a stop animation of our first class at Altos de Chavon. We spent the second half of the day practicing painting at a large scale. Before we began Dan Weiss showed us images of street art and other stop animation videos to possibly use for inspiration. Some of the artists included; Blue, Alex Lebadev, London Police, Doma, And Pez.
